H. Gene Griswold

GENE GRISWOLD, performer, teacher, historian, and administrator, is Professor of Music at Towson University where he teaches early music ensemble, woodwind pedagogy, and music literature.

As a performer, Dr. Griswold has appeared with chamber groups, early music ensembles, theatre orchestras, and symphony orchestras in Baltimore, Washington DC, Richmond, Norfolk, Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga, Corpus Christi, and Evansville (Indiana). He also served as principal bassoonist in The US Navy Band in Washington, D. C..

As a teacher, his bassoon students have won major competitions, academic awards, and positions in professional performing ensembles and the performances of his early music ensembles have earned published reviews.

As a historian, he has received recognition for his research on the bassoon and its performance practice. Dr. Griswold's contributions to major musical reference works include: Recent Researches in Music of the Classical Era, Volume 59 (A-R Editions); the Garland Series - The Symphony 1720-1840 (Series D, Volume X); and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition.

Presentations at international conferences include performances and master classes at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (Russia) as well as papers presented at the Galpin Conference on Musical Instruments held at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), the International Double Reed Society's Conference (Indiana University) and the John Miller Bassoon Symposium at Wooster College (Ohio).

Other writings which have been published and circulated internationally include articles in the Journal of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS); Galpin Society Journal, Journal of the American Musical Instrument Society (AMIS), Double Reed, Music Educators Journal (MEJ), The Instrumentalist, Journal of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, Maryland Music Educator, and the Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Magazine (Cover Story).

As an administrator and presenter of 14 international conferences and symposiums at Towson University, Dr. Griswold has generated 28 favorable reviews in publications including the Philadelphia Inquirer, Washington Post, and the Baltimore Sun Papers and other professional journals.
